SELENA GOMEZ'S MUSICAL CAREER
Selena Gomez (born 22 July, 1992) is a musician and actress, who rose to fame as the star of the Disney Channel television series Wizards of Waverly Place. Previously the lead singer of the pop band Selena Gomez & the Scene, since 2013 she has been performing as a solo artist, enjoying great commercial success along the way.
MORE ABOUT SELENA GOMEZ
Born and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas, Gomez lists artists like Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears among her main musical influences. Starting out with a focus on pop-rock, she began to experiment with EDM and dance-pop elements, gradually transitioning towards a more mature sound.
As an actress, Selena Gomez earned her first credits for multiple appearances on Barney and Friends, as well as a cameo role in the film Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. However, her breakthrough came in 2007, after landing the lead role of Alex Russo in Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place. Gomez performed the opening theme, entitled 'Everything Is Not What It Seems' and continued to experiment with music throughout her time on the show, contributing a cover of 'Cruella de Vil' to the DisneyMania 6 album. As a result, she began to draw comparisons with other Disney stars, including Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. In 2008, as she turned 16, she signed a deal with Hollywood Records. That same year, she formed the band Selena Gomez & the Scene, partially inspired by the band Paramore. The name 'the Scene' was chosen as an ironic retort to criticism Gomez had faced online, where she was repeatedly called a "wannabe scene kid".
Selena Gomez & the Scene released their debut album, Kiss & Tell, in 2009 and lead single 'Falling Down' became a minor hit. Yet, it was the band's second single which catapulted them to mainstream success. Indeed, 'Naturally' sold over two million copies in the United States alone, while also reaching the top 10 in the United Kingdom. A Year Without Rain, the band's second album, was released the following year and placed a greater emphasis on dance-pop. The shift in sound was praised by many critics, who felt it marked an improvement over Selena Gomez & the Scene's previous work. Lead single 'Round & Round' became another top 40 Billboard hit. The band's third album and final album, When the Sun Goes Down, spawned the singles 'Love You like a Love Song' and 'Hit the Lights'. Collaborators on the album included Britney Spears, Pixie Lott and Katy Perry and it performed well commercially, reaching number three on the Billboard 200 and number 15 on the UK Singles Chart.
After a musical hiatus, which included filming the controversial movie Spring Breakers, Gomez returned in 2013 with her first solo album, Stars Dance. Lead single 'Come & Get It' became a top 10 hit in both the United States and United Kingdom, making it her most successful track at that point. That was followed by the release of a Greatest Hits album, 'For You', which spawned another top 10 hit called 'The Heart Wants What It Wants'. This marked her final project for Hollywood Records before signing for Interscope. Her first Interscope album, Revival, was released in 2015, taking inspiration from the likes of Janet Jackson. It attracted widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its mature sound. Her first Interscope single, 'Good For You', reached the top five in the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming her most commercially successful US single, with a Selena Gomez tour currently scheduled for 2015
